Columbus Day?

I refuse to celebrate the day of a murderous coward. Sorry, that was a little harsh. I refuse to celebrate the day of a person who didn’t discover America. Okay, that seems a little too harsh as well. I think I can get it right this time. I refuse to celebrate the day of a man who falsely claimed the Americas. I’m sorry, but to make Columbus Day a national holiday sees a little uneasy to grasp. But I don’t expect much out of a nation that honors a holiday off a mythical Santa Claus and a false birth date. Columbus was an Italian who married and became a Spaniard to try to discover Southeast Asia and trading companies. Oh, and let’s not forget his assumption that the world was round when everybody thought it was flat.
Don’t get me wrong, I applaud the man for loving sailing and adventure and not to be like his father, but laying claim to a bunch of islands and calling it Americas is a bit much. Not to mention the fact that there were people living there. How do you claim somebody else’s land while they’re still on it? Though, his crew wasn’t completely made up of convicts, they maliciously murdered the people by either running them off the land or coughed on them. He didn’t even called the people by what they wanted to be called. He called them Indians because he thought he was in India. He basically challenged the people, almost like a dual, but they weren’t playing. They were not participating. Sounds familiar to what actually happened here, right?
If anything, maybe Columbus should be celebrated more in Cuba than America, since there is Spanish influence there and in Haiti, which he called Hispaniola. The closest Columbus got to America was the Bahamas. His, Juan Ponce de Leon, friend should be awarded with the discovery of Americas or actual America. He also named Puerto Rico. After Columbus’ son took over as governor, Ponce de Leon travelled further north past the Bahamas onto Florida to find the “Fountain of Youth”. As a Spaniard, he was greatly interested in the tales the Indians told him about it. After all, the Garden of Eden was said to been moved to Spain.
But with all of that said, the issue at hand is the fact that Cristobal, oops, Christopher Columbus was a has been. After years of being robbed by pirates and dullified time as a mariner, it still took him three times to earn the money and trust to take the first voyage. Plus, he was suppose to be a conquistador. All Spaniards are conquistadors and conquer land for gold and return them to Spain. Let’s make this clear, Colon…..Columbus was no Cortez or Pissarro. The Arawak Indians ran him off their own island in the Caribbean before he got to Jamaica.
I mean, granted, only bank and federal people are out today, but why can't we have a national holiday after someone who relatable history. Columbus did discover "New World", but calling a (one) island Americas and freely naming the other islands by what he felt like. Ask any West Indian person about the history of Christopher Columbus and they'll tell you the real deal. Columbus Day is like one of those false days that a celebrity gets like, hell, Katt Williams Day. It is a day of no significance. Yeah, we got Martin Luther King Day, but what about a Malcolm X day or even a Tupac day. I've been looking forward to a Deepak Chopra day or at least a Gandhi day. Maybe they have that in India, but the Chopra Center is in California.
All I’m saying is the fact that we supposingly celebrate Columbus Day further justifies the inequality of America and explains why our morals and attitudes are so dissident. America lives in a world by itself. The guy wasn’t even a part of the Illuminati. I think I would rather celebrate Thanksgiving Day for Canada. This all goes to show that not only do we believe what we want to believe, but we can mystify whatever history we want in America and ignore the small stuff. Thank you to Janice for her Canadian roots. Oh, and the reason why the name interruptions, Christopher Columbus had three names. He was born Christoforo Colombo. He then became Christopher Columbus before sailing his first voyage as Cristobal Colon. Also, St. Bart’s was named for his brother, Barthomelew and St. Kitts after himself.
